Trail Estate Winery

Trail Estate Winery is a family run winery in Hillier, Prince Edward County. After five years in business they found themselves growing out of their prefab steel wine production building, and wanted to add more visitor amenities. An extension to the existing building will double its size and include a tasting room, retail space, washrooms and an office. A separate chalet building provides much needed overnight accommodation for the owners and temporary winery staff.

The winery extension is a simple, but carefully detailed gable roof structure complimenting the shape of the existing building. Attic trusses contain a loft space which will be used as an office and storage. The roof and walls will be clad in dark corrugated steel and the gable ends in dark painted wood. From the corridor connecting the two buildings, visitors will have a view into the production facility. The tasting and retail area overlooks the vineyards with a tighter, framed view through a pop-out bay window and a more expansive view on the gable end through sliding glass doors.

Sharing a similar aesthetic, the chalet is also clad in corrugated steel and wood and contains a living space, kitchen, bathroom and sleeping loft. It is turned at a 45° angle from the winery to give it privacy and to create a courtyard between the two buildings.
